As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve spent most of the past nearly-two-months traveling for work. A lot of that was relatively local, which has the benefit of being able to drive my own car (and get paid mileage). Since the 4Runner desperately needs brakes, I took the Crown Vic.

A couple weeks ago I noticed a bit of noise from the front right. I figured it was the endlinks, as these cars like to eat front endlinks. This past week I noticed on the highway it was a bit wander-y. I decided when I got home and put the snow tires on (which is today’s lunchtime fun) to check it out. I’m glad that I did (see video).

Looks like a passenger’s side outer tie rod end and driver’s side upper balljoint (which I replaced like two years ago) are going to have to get squeezed int o the to-do list for this weekend. At least parts for this car are cheap.

Is there a heavier-duty ball joint available than whatever you bought last time?

P robably. I got these as complete control arms with bushings since the bushings were shot too, so they’re not the best. That said, the plan for this car ends in the spring so I’ll go with whatever autozone has in stock for both the tie rod and the balljoint. Neither should be too bad to replace, though the alignment will cost more than the parts. If it were just the tie rod I’d do it myself, but I can’t set caster and camber (plus the passenger’s side camber is out of whack, has been for a while).

I hope they’re the replaceable type. When I changed the control arms o n my old Thunderbird, most places tried to sell me arms with permanently integrated ball joints. H ad to go out of my way to find OE-style ones that were actually serviceable.

They are, the balljoint is on a little bar with a couple slots, there are two eccentric nuts which hold that to the control arm (then clamped with normal nuts), one adjuster camber, one adjusts caster.
